Each chakra is associated with major glands or organs that are in turn connected to other body parts. Open chakras signify a clear movement of energy and allows us to be in good physical and mental health. Sometimes, however, these chakras might become blocked due to emotional upheavals such as a marital conflict, a personal loss or even an accident. A blocked chakra can lead to imbalances in physical, emotional and spiritual health.

You can identify whether you may have a blocked chakra by understanding each of the seven primary chakras and what happens to you if any one of them is blocked.

The Root Chakra, also sometimes known as the Base Chakra, is located at the base of the spine. This chakra is associated with the earth and a feeling of ‘being grounded’ and self-assured. A blocked root chakra may lead to you feeling nervous, fearful and insecure about your safety. On the physical plane, you may often feel fatigued or become constipated easily.

Located on the spine in the lower abdomen, just below the navel, the Sacral Chakra is related to sexuality and creativity. Blocked by the emotion of guilt, a disturbance in this chakra may lead to sexual imbalances, such as being unable to sexually express yourself or sometimes for women to have painful menstrual periods.

The Navel Chakra resides in the solar plexus. Associated with feeling confident, this chakra may become blocked if you feel shame. Issues regarding will-power and self-esteem may arise. If you tend to feel timid and unable to voice your opinion in a gathering, it is your Navel Chakra which is blocked.

The Heart Chakra is related to matters of love and kindness. Not being able to emotionally connect with immediate friends and family members means that the emotion of grief may be blocking this energy centre and not allowing you to bond with people. A heart disease or high blood pressure might also indicate that this chakra is blocked.

The Throat Chakra is associated with being able to communicate your thoughts to others. Linked to the throat and the vocal cords, a blocked Throat Chakra can lead to thyroid problems or a recurring sore throat. This chakra becomes blocked because of lies that you may have told, not only to others but also to yourself in order to avoid truths that you would rather not face.

The famous Third Eye Chakra leads to insight and visualization powers. Located in the center of your forehead, just above the eyes, a free flow of energy in this chakra will lead to intuition, clear thinking and wisdom. One can often get headaches or tend to be depressed if this chakra is blocked.

Finally, the highest chakra is the Crown Chakra, located at the top of the head, slightly towards the back. A shining flow of energy through this chakra leads to feelings of oneness with the world and a connection with the Supreme. A disconnect with the energy flow here may lead to feelings of not being in touch with a Higher God. In the physical world, this may cause difficulty in your sleeping patterns.

Some Chakras in our bodies are more ‘open’ than the others. Worries, personal fears or incidents from the past may lead to some of our chakras becoming blocked. When that happens, the active chakras compensate by allowing more energy to flow through them. However, it is best to have a balanced flow of energy from all chakras. In order to unblock the identified chakra, one must meditate, concentrating on the necessary body part where the chakra lies. So once you have identified which chakra may be blocked, you can start working on opening it and feeling much better.
